How To Take Over a Room

Ever wonder how to take over a room?

Wear red!

Think about it.

  • The red carpet treatment.
  • A red tie on all political candidates.
  • The “lady in red” song.

It captures feelings of prestige, confidence, and even sexiness.

Studies have shown how red influences both the wearer as well as the viewer.  It’s an emotionally intense color. It symbolizes action and courage. It makes the wearer herself feel confident. People stop and take notice.

On the other side of the spectrum, red signifies danger, anger and oppression (think fire trucks and Communism).

So, finding the best balance for the situation is called for. Is a touch of red enough? Or do you need the whole hog – a gorgeous red evening gown? Even choosing the best shade of red makes a difference (think pink vs crimson).

Let’s take a look at some examples, all from MaJe Gallery’s current collection of recent arrivals.

How To Take Over a Room

how to take over a room - wear this wine red jacket from Testimony Los Angeles
Power jacket in wine red

Testimony’s popular Reba jacket now comes in this gorgeous shade of red: wine. This results in a softer reaction from others (as opposed to the vibrant crimson), yet still commands attention. No one will say this is too manly because of the feminine styling and rich color. This jacket exudes confidence without feeling overbearing. Perfect!

how to take over a room - wear this striking red, black and tan wrap from Inside Out Everyday.
A softer red mixed with black and tan

This wrap has splashes of red along with black and tan which soften the intensity of this brighter Venetian Red. Wear this over all black in order to cut a stunning figure in any room you care to enter. It’s subtle, yet cannot be avoided.

how to take over a room - wear this cranberry top over a multi-color Marcia Bloom skirt.
Cranberry top over mixed reds and blacks skirt

Add pizzazz to this mixed-color Marcia Bloom skirt by choosing to bring out the cranberry tones. Sure, you could wear a black top with it too, but wearing the cranberry casts the outfit in a whole new light. Picture it with tall black boots this fall! This is an excellent outfit for weddings, class reunions, or holiday parties. Not only will you be extremely comfortable, you’ll feel generously powerful as the entire room takes notice.

And just for fun…

how to take over a room - wear these awesome SolMate socks called Mars
Newest from SolMate Socks: Mars

Named after the red planet Mars, this newest color palette from our favorite sock company, SolMate, is also called Mars. Paired with turquoise from the opposite side of the color wheel, and accented with black, this fun new color combo is quickly selling out. But never fear! More will come before it’s time to get them for stocking stuffers. Still just $19.95.

We have even more red clothing items to choose from, but you’ll have to stop by to see them in person. I look forward to the visit, and helping you put together the best red outfit for the next situation in which you need to instill confidence in yourself as well as the audience.

Cheers!

Four Tops, Three Skirts, Ready for Fall

New this week at MaJe Gallery are four tops and three great skirts. Actually, there are twelve new skirts – each one of a kind. But only three have pictures here. You have to come in to see the rest!

Let’s start with four tops

These are all made in California by Necessitees – a popular brand that’s been around for quite a while. 94% cotton, 6% spandex ensures a long-lasting shirt. Machine washable.

Here we have a long-sleeve T-shirt in the beautiful wine color. It features a U-neck that’s not too deep. It’s just right.  This one is more form-fitting. If you like it, but don’t like too form-fitting, choose one size larger than your usual and all will be well.  $39.

This neckline is called the “Morocco” – it’s a soft V, a little rounded as it hits the neck. It is particularly flattering. The V is not very deep, perfect to show off you pendant. This is one of the more form-fitting styles, which makes it particularly good for layering. It has 3/4 sleeves in a color called “Beryl” – a lovely blue with a hint of green. $37.

And now for Three Skirts

Marcia Bloom creates funky one-of-a-kind skirts that are extremely comfortable to wear, and a whole lot of fun. Dress them up, or dress them down. Pair your skirt with a solid color top and you are set to go. I’ve seen them paired with a T-shirt and jean jacket for a casual look. Or go for a dressier solid top and a drapey jacket to get more dressy. Pair it with boots in the winter!

New Fall Arrivals at MaJe Gallery – Unique Jewelry, Skirts

New Fall Arrivals

A new fall arrival is this unique ammonite and amber pendant was made by Bonnie AuBuchon
Ammonite and Amber pendant by Lynnwood’s master metalsmith, Bonnie AuBuchon

Two ancient natural substances become beautiful contemporary mates in this one-of-a-kind pendant by Bonnie AuBuchon. Amber is fossilized tree resin, has been appreciated for its color and beauty since Neolithic times.  Ammonites are fossilized sea creatures, similar to a nautilus. A master metalsmith, Bonnie created a flowing frame in sterling silver to unite the separate elements together. This is just one of our new fall arrivals. It hangs from a black leather cord measuring 17″

New fall arrival - a brushed silver necklace and earring set by Christophe Poly
Christophe Poly necklace and earring set

Also among our new fall arrivals is new jewelry by Montreal’s Christophe Poly. He studied architecture in college, then fell in love with the small scale of jewelry sculpture. One of the most popular jewelers at MaJe Gallery, this is one of the newest pieces in our new fall arrivals. Brushed silver and bronze with aqua cat’s eye stones, it sits on a 17″ double wire necklace with a magnetic clasp. (Update 10/12: Necklace now sold)

A new fall arrival: this necklace and earring set of bright silver with lavender cat's eye.
Another set by the popular Christophe Poly

Once familiar with the jewelry of Christophe Poly, it’s easy to recognize. This set is composed of bright, shiny silver, with one brushed silver circle on the right side. The lavender cat’s eye gives it a cool mood. Like above, this is also on the 17″ double wire with magnetic clasp.

New fall arrivals: more subdued skirts by Marcia Bloom
Fall skirts by Marcia Bloom

Also among our new fall arrivals are these fairly subdued skirts from our usually riotously colored skirts by California’s Marcia Bloom. As comfortable as always, these would all look great with your black boots this fall and winter.  One size fits 6 – 16. Don’t believe me? Stop by and see for yourself! (Update: These three are now sold out.)

New fall arrivals look great in this skirt, top and scarf
Outfit of the week for the first day of fall

Flummoxed about how to work with your Marcia Bloom skirt? Check out this one here with the lovely fall colors. We recommend pairing Marcia’s skirts with a solid-colored top. Pull the top and bottom together by selecting a second color from the skirt, and wear that as a scarf (or a necklace if you prefer). In this instance, we choose the medium brown from one of the stripes in the skirt and found a top in that color. Here is a Luxe Junkie 3/4 sleeve top in “mocha”. Next, we choose the brightest color in the skirt for the scarf – a rich terra cotta. This is a hand-painted silk scarf by our beloved Birgit Moening. (Update: this exact skirt has sold. However, we have one similar. It’s the same fabric in the body and hem. The waistband is a different fabric. Interested? I can send you a photo.)

Alternatively, wear a solid terra cotta top, and either a mocha or mustard scarf. By selecting higher contrasts, you make a very stylish statement with ease.

New Jewelry at MaJe

Great news! In the “new jewelry” category, for all you Joseph Brinton Jewelry fans, even though he won’t be doing art shows anymore, you can still find his jewelry.  Where?  At MaJe Gallery of course! We are now the exclusive distributor of this artistic and affordable jewelry line from Portland, OR. We have a very large selection right now, so stop by as soon as you can.

More new jewelry comes in the form of the ever-popular sterling rings by Lynnwood’s Bonnie AuBuchon. Bonnie just delivered a large collection with stones like aquamarine, labradorite, turquoise and larimar.  Here are three to whet your appetite.

New jewelry like these three rings from Bonnie AuBuchon
Three new rings by Bonnie AuBuchon

On the left, in that unique and beloved blue, is the larimar in a simple sterling setting and single-row band. Currently sized at 6 1/2, we can re-size it to your needs.  In the middle is a fascinating amethyst with lots of white matrix within. Set in a simple sterling bezel with a triple-row band.  Currently sized at 7, again, we can re-size it for you if needed.  A glowing carnelian is on the right, sized at 5 1/2. The bezel has a fancy edge. The band is a split double-wide, and  I don’t need to mention that we can make it your size.

New Art at MaJe

"New Buds" mixed media collage by DJ Perry
“New Buds” mixed media collage by DJ Perry

Multiple-award winning artist Donna Jean Perry delivered a new collection of works including this ode to our changing seasons, “New Buds.”  While the leaves will fall off soon, never fear! Spring is just months away and new buds will appear on those bare branches. This piece is beautifully framed with an ivory mat and matte black frame that measures 28″ x 22″, so it’s ready to hang immediately.

Outfits of the Week

Skirt, Top and jewelry - all new at MaJe
First Outfit of the Week

As we move into fall, our clothing choices are turning autumnal! Check out this gorgeous one-of-a-kind skirt by Marcia Bloom. (Sorry to report that it has now sold. However, other similar skirts are still available.) It’s longer than usual, and sports TWO layers. The top layer is sheer, so she built in a slip. The scalloped hem zigs where the slip zags, while peaking out from beneath in an enticing way. Paired here with an aubergine top by Testimony Los Angeles, you could certainly also wear it with olive green, magenta, terra cotta, black or white. This skirt could easily transition from fall to winter and into spring, therefore adding a versatile skirt to your collection.

In keeping with the colors and mood, I paired it here with a one-of-a-kind necklace by Poulsbo’s Poppy Design. A jade pendant carved into a dragon is the main focus. Coppery-gold coin pearls are punctuated with wavy silver tubes and white glass beads. It’s doubled up here, but could also be worn long at 32″.

New clothing by Pam Wells
Terra Cotta “Dragonfly” jacket by Pam Wells.

Terra Cotta and Eggplant colors unite in this lovely vest-like piece by Olympia’s Pam Wells. Made from vintage silk sari fabric, so it is easy to dress up or down. I paired it here with an ivory top by Testimony Los Angeles, as well as their pocket pants in “sand.” The simple carnelian pendant was made in Seattle by Mary Freiberger. Easy to wear. Easy care. Comfortable and stylish.

The Newest Artistic Jewelry at MaJe

You could wear jewelry that a million other women are wearing.  Or… you could wear some of the newest artistic jewelry that just arrived at MaJe Gallery this week. And the best part? Frequently, the price would be the same as you paid for a mass produced item.

Take these popular earrings by Northwest artisan Passiko, for example.

newest artistic jewelry at MaJe includes these "best friend" earrings by Passiko
“Best Friend” earrings by Passiko

According to Passiko, these earrings are like best friends.  Why? Because in the same way that your best friend has many similarities to you, you are also not exactly the same.  Rather, you compliment each other perfectly.

Made uniquely of sterling silver wire and hand-made glass beads (also made in the northwest), no pair is like any other.  More colors and shapes now available at MaJe Gallery.

New Artist Brett Mathewson

the newest artistic jewelry includes this larimar set by new MaJe jewelry Brett Mathewson

For those of you interested in the metaphysical qualities of stones, larimar is said to awaken feminine power and soothe emotions.

The pendant includes a 24″ sterling silver snake chain.  The ring is a size 8.

Elegant simplicity characterizes Brett’s jewelry, as seen in her “trillium” earrings. Very light-weight, yet creating a stunning presence on your ears, her “trillium” collection is not only easy to wear, it is also simply beautiful. You can even watch this video about how to put on these lovely earrings.

Master Faceter Bill Booze

Two stunning new rings from Bill Booze highlight his expertise in faceting - the perfect addition to your artistic jewelry collection
Two new rings from our master faceter, Bill Booze

No jewelry collection is complete without at least one ring from Bill Booze. Striking in their simplicity, Bill’s expertise lies in his 30+ years experience faceting colored gemstones. Bill includes additional facets beneath each stone to elicit maximum sparkle in his line of artistic jewelry. Naturally, he chooses only the finest stones to begin with as well.

On the left, we find a large amethyst from the Four Peaks mine of Arizona, noted to be among the finest producers of amethyst in the world. Noted for their deep color, while also having vibrant notes of red and magenta, these are lively stones indeed. This particular amethyst is set in a curved sterling band. Let us know your size, and we’ll get it to you in a size that fits.

On the right, you’ll find three tourmalines: seafoam, sage green, and olive green. What a gorgeous sterling setting it is, too. This is a glorious ring. I do hope you’ll stop by to see it in person. Just let us know your ring size, and we’ll get it to you in that size.

New Arrivals of Jewelry, Clothing and Art at MaJe

Every week brings new arrivals of treasures to find at MaJe Gallery.  This week’s treasures include a lovely new jewelry collection from the eclectic Poulsbo artist, Poppy.  Poppy is constantly on the lookout for unusual components to include in her work, from vintage finds to Taxco silver to delectable pearls and gems. She never makes two pieces the same.

If you’re a fan of the Sundance catalog, then two of her current pieces might be of special interest to you.  Unlike the Sundance catalog, no one else will ever have these!

4-wrap necklace and 4-strand bracelet by Poppy is among our new arrivals this week
4-wrap necklace and 4-strand bracelet by Poppy

On the left, variously shaped white pearls mix with a whole variety of sterling silver chains.  It’s long enough to wear doubled, tripled, or quadrupled as shown here.  The neutral tones go with just about anything.  This is most definitely not your mother’s pearls.

On the right, a four-strand bracelet features one row of labradorite rondelles. A cable chain is adorned with a pair of amber beads, while another chain features a coin-shaped picture jasper bead.  The fourth row has blue coral ovals captured between oval sterling chain links.  The toggle clasp makes it adjustable for 7.25″ – 8.25″.  Alas, this found a home on June 11, 2016.

After The Rain II, by Julie Gangler, one of the new arrivals this week
After The Rain II, by Julie Gangler

Local artist Julie Gangler loves to incorporate color and texture into her paintings.  Among our new arrivals is her latest one, After The Rain II, is oil on board. Julie used a small palette knife to add texture to different areas, making the visual impact quite compelling.  It’s so yummy you can almost smell that unique smell that comes after a recent rainfall in a meadow.

Summer blues and soft white is a favorite of our new arrivals.
Summer blues and soft white

Perhaps our favorite of the new arrivals is a new collection of delightful skirts by our favorite skirt-maker, Marcia Bloom, just arrived.  These are all cotton, and each features a pocket!  Most of the pockets have a bit of vintage handkerchief appliqued onto the surface.

The soft blues and whites in this skirt make it the perfect skirt for your summer explorations.  I paired it with a Luxe Junkie tank top in “sea”, and the ivory bolero by Testimony. When ordering the bolero, be sure to note your size.  At the moment, I only have XS, L and XL in stock.  I can definitely order other sizes.  Just let me know!

Five more cotton skirts await your fancy!  Stop by to check them out.  They are simply to die for.
